Regaining Male Strength Can Prevent Falls

By Mark Bromson, M.D.

It's no secret that the population of the United States is aging. If you are part of the baby boomer generation, you know this all too well. I see many new patients each month who need orthopedic care due to the effects of growing older.

Often, the thing that brings a patient to see me is an unexpected fall. In fact, one in every three Americans will experience a fall this year, and the problem is often recurring. In order to help this large number of people, scientists and doctors have begun looking at the reasons behind falling that go beyond simple loss of physical abilities. In my evaluations of the current research, I've found one key to the problem of falling in men, and it has to do with hormones.

Strength Is Not The Only Predictor Of Falling

Falls may be the leading cause of nonfatal medical injuries in the United States, but you don't have to be a victim of this debilitating problem. Regular exercise and maintaining muscular strength is still important, but a recent study in the journal, Archives of Internal Medicine, showed that low testosterone levels may be associated with an increased risk of falling in older men.

We know that testosterone levels in the bloodstream decline with age, affecting strength and vitality. In the study, over 2,500 men aged 65 to 99 were evaluated over a two-year period. Evidence showed that the quarter of the group with the lowest testosterone levels had a 40% greater chance of falling than the men with the highest testosterone levels.

The most intriguing finding, in my opinion, is that this increased risk was present regardless of the men's physical strength and abilities. Therefore, testosterone affects the aging body in other ways not previously recognized, possibly impairing vision, balance and coordination. This may account for the high incidence of falling in men with the lowest testosterone levels.

Reduce Your Risk

Since testosterone levels are prone to decline with age, it is important to raise those levels in order to avoid a fall. There are many effective supplements available on the market, and my favorite testosterone boosters are all-natural. Look for ingredients such as: Muricen Purena, Tribulus Terrestris, Chrysin, and DIM. Studies show that these and other natural hormone-stimulating ingredients can be just as effective (and safer) than synthetic versions.

A quality natural testosterone product will not only raise the hormone level in your bloodstream, but also increase libido, sexual stamina and male strength. Another important finding of the study is that the increased risk of falling was most evident in the younger men in the group - the ones between 65 and 69 years of age.

Therefore, you should not wait until your golden years to boost your testosterone levels. Taking action now will not only bolster strength and stamina, but ensure a healthy future without fear of injury from falling. Remember it's never too early to start caring for your health in years to come.
